African Peace Builders Visit Sawa Team in Canada
On August 5, 2010, Sawa World was privileged to host program participants of the YMCA Youth Peace Network, Esther Kiriachiuri from Kenya and Francis Mlay from Tanzania. During the meeting, the Sawa team discussed its innovative model for alleviating poverty, while Kiriachiuri and Mlay offered valuable feedback. As well, the group discussed the potential of exciting partnerships with film schools in Kenya and Tanzania with the goal of training unemployed youth to document local Sawa Leaders. The two, who are working to promote peace in their own countries, are in Vancouver on a 3-month voluntary exchange. The program allows young people from all over the world to learn about cultural diversity and develop leadership and community building skills, while teaching children to be more effective global citizens. Both the youth leaders and Sawa team members, Sarah Mathias and Raul Jimenez Navarro, gained valuable insights from the visit and had a lot of fun in the process.
