New Year's Message from Sawa’s Founder

New Year's Message from Sawa’s Founder

Sawa World (formerly Sawa Global) heads into 2011 with a new name, a fresh look and an unwavering commitment to open the world’s eyes to the fact that the solutions to extreme poverty already exist. I’ve seen for myself the desire and determination of those who live in poverty. I’ve seen the innovative projects they’ve started with little outside resources and I’ve spent the past ten years dedicated to building a team who could help me share this message with the world.

During the last 50 years, over 1 trillion dollars have been spent on foreign aid with little improvement for the approximately 1 billion people that still live on one dollar per day or less. In fact, renowned author Dambisa Moyo of the book Dead Aid, states “Across the continent of Africa, the recipients of this aid are not better off as a result of it, but worse—much worse.”

In 2011, Sawa World wants the world to see that people living in the most impoverished conditions already have the answers to extreme poverty! Sawa works with these local champions to assist them in growing and replicating their solutions so they can thrive free of charity and foreign aid. If the international community wants to see a world free of extreme poverty they must learn from those who live in it everyday. It is then we can create a world free of extreme poverty: a Sawa World.

Warmest wishes for 2011.
