Sawa World Plans Partnership with UNICEF Uganda

After communicating with the Director of UNICEF Uganda, Sharad Sapra, for over a year, Sawa Founder, Daphne Nederhorst, visited his team in Uganda in March. At the UNICEF headquarters in Kampala, Nederhorst and Chief of Communications, Dheepa Pandian, discussed their partnership and strategies for using media to empower youth living in extreme poverty.

Some of their ideas included: Having Sawa Youth Reporters conduct workshops for UNICEF staff and project beneficiaries (at risk youth) on Sawa Leaders’ solutions for fighting extreme poverty; training UNICEF youth to document poverty-fighting success stories in their communities; and having Sawa Youth Reporters become “U-reporters” (youth reporters for UNICEF). They also discussed having the Sawa Team conduct training on the Sawa model and strategies for maintaining practical, long-term project outcomes.

Pandian has arranged a meeting in early May with Sawa's local media partner, Uganda Film and Television Institute to continue exploring partnership options with UNICEF Uganda. More to come soon.
