Sawa World Visits Uganda

By now Sawa World Founder, Daphne Nederhorst, is well into her 21-day trip in the vibrant Sawa Focus Country of Uganda. Since March 2011, the organization has been collaborating with a group of dedicated individuals in Uganda as well as in Rwanda, Kenya, and Zambia to find effective solutions to extreme poverty.  Nederhorst was excited to see the progress that Sawa Leaders and Sawa Youth Reporters have made since she was last there. She also looked forward to building new strategic partnerships with local organizations.

Since her arrival, Nederhorst has met with current Sawa Leaders. She has documented some of their amazing work on Facebook, and spent time identifying new Leaders. Ugandan Leader Anny Ngoga Bwengye, who sees the value in Sawa’s unique approach said, “We have all the local resources and wealth in our own countries to solve extreme poverty more than foreign aid can every provide."

New volunteers have also joined Sawa along the way! "I have only been with the Sawa team for a few days and I'm so inspired with how they approach solving poverty in our communities. I want to be a volunteer for them. Sawa World forever!" Said new Sawa Team Driver, Griffin.

Also, Nederhorst has joined Sawa Youth Reporters in the field. She has participated in their training, reviewed program impacts, and searched for new candidates. The Sawa Youth Reporters made a great impact when they were interviewed on Capital Radio, a national radio station. On air they discussed Sawa World’s unique model. In December, the station will document the inspiring story of a Sawa Leader.

And that’s not all! This trip, Sawa World has partnered with Straight Talk, Urban TV and the Community for Development Foundation, an organization that reaches out to millions of impoverished people using media technology. Sawa has also moved its Ugandan office to St. Laurence University in Kampala: a leader in innovation and entrepreneurship.
