There is something special about welcoming people who share your belief that communities can create better lives when they have the right opportunities, skills and support.
This week, the team was honored to welcome Rt. Rev. Michael Okwii Esakhan, Bishop of Kumi, together with leaders from the Diocese of Kumi, to the Sawa World Solution Centre.
The visit was an opportunity to connect, share ideas and explore how two organizations with a shared commitment to community transformation can work together to create lasting impact.
At the center of our conversations was the Diocese of Kumi’s 25th Anniversary Initiative and its vision for the years ahead. We explored how this vision can align with Sawa World’s community-led approach, which places people at the center of their own transformation.
Learning from communities and building on local potential
At Sawa World, we believe that communities are not empty spaces waiting for solutions to be brought to them. They are full of people with knowledge, ideas, creativity and the determination to improve their lives.
Often, what is missing is not potential. It is access to practical opportunities and local income skills that people can use to turn what they already have into sustainable livelihoods.
This belief shaped much of the conversation during the visit.
The Bishop and the Diocese of Kumi leaders had the opportunity to learn more about how Sawa World works with communities to identify practical local solutions and help people build skills that can generate income.
They also had the opportunity to see this approach in action.
One of the highlights of the visit was meeting Ketty, a Sawa World beneficiary who learned oil extraction from herbs. Today, she generates income from the skills that have sustained her and her family.
Her experience is a powerful reminder that transformation does not always begin with something big. Sometimes, it begins with a simple skill, a willingness to learn and an opportunity to put that knowledge into practice.
When people can use their skills to earn an income, support their families and make decisions about their future, the impact reaches far beyond one individual. It can strengthen households and contribute to stronger communities.
From the Solution Centre to an urban farm
The visit also included a tour of our urban farm, where the delegation explored how small spaces can be used to grow food and create opportunities for households.
The Bishop was particularly interested in the possibilities of urban farming and left with a few seedlings to set up his own farm.
For us, it captured an important part of what we believe at Sawa World. Solutions do not have to remain at the Solution Centre. They can travel with people, take root in new places and be adapted to meet the needs of different communities.
A shared dream for communities
The visit reinforced something we deeply value at Sawa World: meaningful transformation grows through partnership.
When organizations, leaders and communities come together, they can learn from one another, build on what is already working and create new possibilities for people.
Our conversation with the leaders of the Diocese of Kumi showed us that we share a common dream, to see communities become stronger, people gain practical skills, families improve their livelihoods and individuals have greater confidence in their ability to shape their own futures.
It starts with their ideas, their experiences, their strengths and their determination to move forward. When these are supported with practical skills and opportunities, people can create change that lasts.
