Talking, laughing, and barely able to contain their excitement, over 1,565 local youth streamed into the Sawa World Solution Centre on September 24th to celebrate its Fourth Annual World Day. Eager participants lined up 3 hours beforehand for what was also the centre’s official launch.
The lure? Workshops that demonstrated dozens of small enterprises— simple and low-cost business ideas that quickly yield income. Attendees learned how to make books, eco-briquettes from organic matter, liquid soap, earrings, potted plants, wooden toys, recycled straw handbags, banana-fibre wallets, African-fabric earrings, sugar cane juice, and much more. Not surprisingly, freshly baked Queen cakes proved to be one of the most popular solution demonstrations. Over 21 Sparks and 31 volunteers contributed to the successful event that included the Africa Yoga Project, Social Innovation Academy (SINA), and extensive media coverage.
Over 400 youth who attended plan to join the Centre and stay involved with solution activities in the upcoming year. And nearly 600 Makerere University students have already started to replicate solutions they learned from Sawa World Day. That’s impact!
