Kind-hearted Geoffrey Ekongo wanted to help his security-guard/gatekeeper expand his practical skills and earn extra money.  Researching ideas, Geoffrey came across a Sawa World Solution Video on replicating sandals.  Sandals, worn by nearly everyone year-round in Uganda, seemed a perfect solution for self-employment; they were inexpensive to make and cost little for buyers.  Materials—many re-usable–cost about $19 US (or 60,000 Ugandan Shillings), and 20 pairs per month can easily be sold, resulting in $65 US profits.

Friend Rosette watched the Sawa Solution Video with Geoffrey and was inspired.  Here was an inexpensive way to start a business making handcrafted sandals incorporating traditional designs.  Rosette eagerly tried her hand at replicating the video’s steps, making sandals for herself and Geoffrey. The next day, both popped into the Solution Centre to learn more about Sawa World and what they do. Two staff members set up an immediate training workshop with shoemaker Spark John, a leader of local solutions to affect positive change.  Rosette was thrilled to learn how to perfect her technique and improve her skill.  Geoffrey was impressed with the self-employment practical options and training Sawa World offers the community.
